ho is first on our list of interviewees?" asked Nolan once they had taken their leave of the Puffins. "It appears I may have to talk to the entire population of- how many souls?"

"Six hundred and two, if you count Mrs. Chadwick's newborn. But I don't think that will be necessary." Constable Rock started up the tiny Hillman that served as her patrol car when she didn't use her bicycle.

"What I'm wondering..." The inspector seemed to be speaking aloud as they bumped along the rocky road to the east end of the island. "I wonder how Vicar Longmire was transported to Devil's Slide. I mean his bicycle was found at the airstrip, isn't that right?"

"Given that Lundy is three miles long and half a mile wide, the bicycle was exactly in the middle of the island, Inspector. As for transport, there aren't many autos. Several motorcycles though, some of them with side cars. Then again, a strong man might have carried him to the cliff and tossed him over."

The town of Marisco was behind them now. Ahead, the tip of the lighthouse known as South Light loomed. "Tell me, Miss Rock..."

"You may call me Jenny, Inspector," she said with a bright smile. "Everyone here does."

"Then tell me, Jenny, about Reverend Longmire. He was Lundy's vicar for a quarter of a century, wasn't he?"

"That's right, from 1929 until today."

"For a man so universally despised, why didn't the parishioners have him recalled?"

"They tried, several times. Church politics. He was related to the archbishop, you see."
