The Perry Mason of this tale is quite different than the prosperous, successful lawyer detective with whom we are most familiar. The Mason of "Velvet Claws" is a down-at-heel gumshoe in the Sam Spade tradition. Over the years, apparently, his capital rose. The portrait of Perry Mason on the stamp is clearly modeled after-Well, you remember the veteran TV actor's name, don't you? (*)
(*) For those with short memories, Raymond Burr made Perry Mason famous on TV and in film.
