Q: In what novel did Perry Mason make his first appearance?

Answer: It was in a deep year of the Great Depression, 1933 that Mason first appeared in The Case of the Velvet Claws.

The Perry Mason of this tale is quite different than the prosperous, successful lawyer detective with whom we are most familiar. The Mason of "Velvet Claws" is a down-at-heel gumshoe in the Sam Spade tradition. Over the years, apparently, his capital rose. The portrait of Perry Mason on the stamp is clearly modeled after-Well, you remember the veteran TV actor's name, don't you? (*)

(*) For those with short memories, Raymond Burr made Perry Mason famous on TV and in film.
